Winter Skincare Tips
Many factors contribute to dry skin in winter. The biggest one being indoor heating systems, we also spend less time outdoors, don't use heavy enough barrier creams to protect our skin from the elements and we often shower and bathe too much which strips our skin from our own precious oils.
We also don't know which products work best in winter on our skin.
How can we fix this?
1 Turn down the electric heat in the bedroom
2 Make sure that there is moisture added to the air ( from the shower, boiling kettle, leaving bowls of water throughout your living space, you can make them look pretty with seashells, candles and flowers if you need it to look aesthetically pleasing (which I like to do!)
3 Stop using petroleum based products, they all clog pores and cause milia, blemishes and acne and your skin cannot breathe! you wouldn't cover your nose completely so why would you abuse the body's largest organ like this? Probably because like most people you don't read what is in most products and don't have an understanding of what these ingredients do. Personally I have oily combination skin so these products wreak havoc on my skin. I use our Luxury Tea Cream in the winter as a barrier cream, it works without the unnatural heaviness of vaseline based products. My skin glows, feels soft and I can wear it out while I walk my dog, go for a run. It is the perfect companion on a ski trip, skidooing or while you are boating.
4 Educate yourself, read about ingredients, visit Health Canada's website, visit Davids Suzuki's site on the Dirty Dozen article. Trust yourself when a product doens't feel good on your skin and remove it immediately.
5 Pass on this information especially to teens who struggle with acne, hydration doens't cause acne, oiliness doesn't either, your pores clog, thus becoming anaerobic. Without oxygen bacteria has a party in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. And what do we do? We add alcohol based products to dry up everything which causes more dryness and this causes more acne because the pores are not able to get the oxygen that the crusted dry skin has formed over the pores.
IF there is anything I am an expert on it is acne, I had it really bad in high school and it has been with me my whole adult life, I know how to keep it under control from experience. Cleanse, tone and moisturize morning and night with products free of fragrance and chemically based preservatives that are known to aggravate the skin.
